The short answer
A single wallpapered wall is a strong, low-commitment upgrade for Winter Park's older and renovated homes. We prep aged walls properly, scale the pattern to the room and leave crisp, tight edges.
Winter Park, about 10 miles north of our Orlando base, has a large share of established houses: mid-century concrete-block ranches, cottages with smaller rooms, and older two-story homes that have been renovated more than once. In houses like these, one papered wall can do a lot of work. It can give a narrow dining room a sense of purpose, make a small bedroom feel deliberate rather than cramped, or turn a plain hallway end into something you notice on the way to the kitchen. We hang accent walls across ZIP code 32789 and the surrounding neighborhoods, with prep tailored to walls that have seen decades of paint.
Why one wall works well in older houses
Rooms in many mid-century Winter Park homes are modest in size, with doors and windows placed wherever the original plan put them. Papering all four walls of a small room can feel heavy, and the more openings a room has, the more cuts and pattern breaks appear. A single wall avoids most of that. You pick the cleanest, most visible surface and let it carry the design.
The best candidate is usually the wall you face when entering, or the one behind a natural focal point like a bed, a sideboard or a reading chair. It helps if that wall has few outlets and no doorway in the middle.
Getting older walls ready
Walls in older homes rarely start out smooth. Layers of paint build up ridges and drips, earlier repairs leave patches with a different texture, and paint applied over a glossy finish can peel when wet paste pulls on it. Some homes still have old wallpaper hidden under paint. We test the surface first, scraping a small spot to see what is underneath and checking that the existing paint is firmly bonded.
Then the real prep happens: loose paint is removed, cracks and holes are filled, ridges are sanded, and the whole wall is sealed with a primer made for wallcoverings. If the wall is noticeably uneven, a skim coat gives the paper a flat base. This step takes time, but on an accent wall every flaw is under a spotlight, so it is worth it.
- Scrape-test to find hidden wallpaper or weak paint
- Fill settlement cracks, especially near window corners on block walls
- Sand drips and roller ridges from years of repainting
- Skim coat badly uneven areas
- Seal with a wallcovering primer before hanging
Working with shade and light
Many Winter Park streets are lined with large, established trees, and rooms in those homes can be softly lit even at midday. Dark, moody papers can look rich in that light but may close in a small room. Papers with a bit of sheen, a metallic ink or a light ground color reflect more of the available light and keep the space feeling open.
Rooms facing west or overlooking a lake can be the opposite: bright and warm in the afternoon. Strong sun can fade some inks over time, so for those walls we may suggest a fade-resistant material or a different wall in the room.
Pattern ideas that suit the house
Older architecture gives you permission to go a little traditional, though many owners pair a classic home with a modern print for contrast. Some combinations we often discuss:
- Botanical prints on a breakfast nook wall that faces the yard
- Fine stripes or a small geometric behind a bed in a compact bedroom
- Textured grasscloth-look vinyl on a home office wall
- A bold scenic or large floral on a powder room's back wall
- Subtle damask in a dining room with original trim
Install day and after
Expect a few hours for a single wall once prep is complete. We center the design, hang from the middle outward and trim carefully along older moldings, which are not always straight. Outlet covers go back on and the area is cleaned before we leave.
Keep the air conditioning on as usual for the next several days, particularly in the humid summer months, so the paste cures evenly. Our team also hangs accent walls in Maitland, Eatonville, Edgewood, Belle Isle and Sky Lake.
