The short answer
Grasscloth installs well in Ocoee bedrooms, offices and living spaces when the wall is smoothed, primed and kept at a stable indoor climate. Expect visible seams and natural color variation; careful sequencing makes them look intentional.
Natural grasscloth has a quiet, tactile look that sits well in Ocoee homes with light floors and plenty of daylight. It also has a reputation for being tricky to hang, and that reputation is earned. Fibers fray if a blade is dull, paste stains the face permanently, and color varies from roll to roll. We install grasscloth across Ocoee and ZIP code 34761, about 12 miles northwest of our Orlando shop, and this page explains the practical side: which walls suit it, what prep it needs over typical knockdown drywall, and how humidity affects a woven wallcovering in a Central Florida house.
Is grasscloth right for your space?
Think of grasscloth as a fabric on the wall. It is beautiful in rooms where people look at it rather than touch it. In Ocoee, good matches include a dining room wall, the area behind a bed, a home office, or a formal living room that does not see heavy daily traffic.
It is a weaker match for family rooms where kids lean against the wall, mudrooms by the garage door, or bathrooms with a tub or shower. In those places, a printed or embossed vinyl that imitates grasscloth gives a similar look with a wipeable surface. We are happy to bring both options into the conversation.
Prep over newer-home drywall
A lot of Ocoee houses have orange-peel or knockdown texture on interior walls. Because grasscloth is thin and often slightly see-through, that texture and any color differences underneath can show. A joint compound patch that is whiter than the surrounding paint, for example, can read as a pale shadow through light fibers.
We usually skim the wall smooth and then apply a pigmented primer, tinted close to the grasscloth color when the fibers are especially sheer. That gives the material a flat, even base. For homes with older smooth plaster, we check for loose spots and patch them first.
Handling shading and seams
No two rolls of natural grasscloth look exactly the same. Here is how we manage that on site:
- Check that every roll carries the same run or batch number before work starts
- Unroll and compare panels side by side under natural light
- Group similar panels and place the most consistent ones on the most visible wall
- Save panels with stronger variation for areas above doors, below windows or behind furniture
- Butt seams tightly without overlapping, and roll them lightly so fibers stay lofted
- Trim with a new blade constantly to keep edges crisp and prevent fraying
Humidity and woven wallcoverings
Plant fibers expand slightly in damp air and contract when it dries. Central Florida summers, which stay hot and humid from June through September with storms most afternoons, push indoor moisture up whenever doors to the lanai or garage stay open. Keeping the air conditioning running steadily is the simplest way to protect grasscloth year round.
Winters here are mild and much drier, so a room may feel noticeably different in January than in August. Small seam movement through the seasons is part of living with natural fibers. If an extended power outage hits during hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30, let the room return to normal before judging any changes.
Choosing a weave and fiber
Grasscloth comes in more varieties than most people realize. Sisal has a tight, even, almost linen-like weave and tends to show seams less than other fibers. Jute is coarser and chunkier, with a rustic, nubby face. Arrowroot and seagrass carry wider strands with more visible knots and color streaks, which many homeowners love for a relaxed, coastal-casual feel even this far inland. Paperweaves twist strips of paper into a woven look and are a little more uniform.
There are also printed or dyed grasscloths, with patterns screened onto the fibers. These look striking, but pattern matching across a material that varies roll to roll requires extra planning. Bring a few samples home, pin them up on the actual wall, and look at them under both lamp light and daylight before deciding. The texture you notice in a showroom can look very different against your own paint and floors.
Getting started in Ocoee
Measure the walls you are considering and send us the dimensions along with the product you like. We will tell you how many rolls to order, plus one spare from the same run for future repairs. Because grasscloth is so sensitive to paste on the face, we recommend you leave the hanging to us even if you are handy. Our crew also installs grasscloth in Winter Garden, Windermere, Eatonville, Maitland and Winter Park.
