The short answer
An accent wall is one papered wall that anchors a room. In Eatonville homes, often single-story block houses with modest rooms, we help choose the wall and pattern, prep older surfaces properly and usually finish in one visit.
Eatonville is a small Orange County town about 11 miles north of our Orlando base, tucked between Maitland and Winter Park, with a strong sense of its own history. Many houses here are modest single-story homes, often concrete block, with rooms sized for living rather than for show. That is exactly where one papered wall earns its keep. A feature wall gives a compact living room, bedroom or dining nook a clear point of interest, uses a fraction of the material a full room needs and can be finished in a single day. This page walks through how we plan and hang accent walls for Eatonville homeowners, with a focus on smaller rooms, older surfaces and our sticky summers.
Making a modest room feel designed
In a smaller room, papering all four walls can feel closed in, particularly with a dark or busy print. A single wall gives you the color and character without that boxed-in effect. The eye goes to the pattern, and the other painted walls give it space to breathe.
Placement does a lot of the work. Papering the wall farthest from the door pulls attention across the room and can make it read deeper. A horizontal pattern on a short wall can make it seem wider, and a vertical stripe draws the eye up toward the ceiling, which helps in rooms with standard eight-foot heights. We talk through these effects with you before choosing a design.
- Far wall from the entry to add depth
- Vertical designs to lift a low ceiling
- Light grounds to keep a small room bright
- One bold wall paired with soft painted walls
Working with block walls and older plaster
A lot of Eatonville homes were built with concrete block exterior walls. Inside, those walls may be finished with plaster applied right onto the block or with drywall fastened to furring strips. Interior partition walls are often drywall or plaster over lath. Over the decades, many have been patched, painted repeatedly and sometimes papered before.
Before hanging anything, we look for cracks, peeling paint and old paper hidden under paint. Hairline cracks in plaster over block are common and usually stable, but they should be filled and sealed so they do not show through. Glossy old enamel paint needs scuffing or a bonding primer. With the surface sound and primed, these walls hold wallpaper very well.
Choosing a design that fits the house
Single-story homes from the mid-twentieth century suit a range of styles. Retro geometrics and mid-century botanicals feel at home. Simple stripes and small prints work in bedrooms. Large tropical leaves can be striking in a living room if the wall is wide enough to show a full repeat. For a compact room, we usually suggest a pattern with a medium repeat so at least two full motifs fit across the wall.
Think also about what will stand in front of it. A tall bookcase or a large headboard will hide part of the design, so a pattern that reads well in small glimpses is a smart choice there.
A typical accent wall visit
We move furniture a few feet away and cover the floor. Power to outlets and switches on the wall is turned off, cover plates come off, and holes and cracks are filled and sanded. A wallcovering primer is rolled on and allowed to dry.
We then decide where the pattern starts, usually centered on the wall or on a piece of furniture, and mark a plumb line. Each strip is cut with the repeat in mind, pasted or hung according to the product, and matched carefully to its neighbor. Edges are trimmed at the ceiling and baseboard, plates go back on, and the floor is cleaned.
In most homes this is a one-day job, and the room is usable that evening.
Handling heat, storms and humidity
Central Florida summers, from June through September, are hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms almost every day. Older homes can be a little leakier than new construction, so indoor humidity may rise when the air conditioning cycles off. Wallpaper hung in damp air and then dried quickly may shrink at the seams.
We bring the paper into the conditioned room ahead of time, keep the AC running while we work and recommend it stays on steadily for several days. Nonwoven and vinyl products handle these conditions better than delicate traditional papers, so we often suggest them for homes that run warm.
