The short answer
We hang single feature walls in Maitland homes, usually finishing a standard accent wall in one visit. We help choose the wall and the paper, prep the surface properly and trim every edge cleanly so the result looks built in.
One papered wall can change how a Maitland room feels without committing the whole space to a pattern. We install accent walls for homeowners in the 32751 ZIP code, driving about 12 miles north from our Orlando base to hang a single feature wall behind a bed, a sofa, a dining table or a home office desk. Our job is to help you pick the right wall, choose a paper that holds up in a humid Central Florida house, and leave a surface with tight seams, crisp edges and no bubbles. This page covers how we approach that one-wall project specifically, from the first look at the room to the final trim cut along the baseboard.
Choosing which wall gets the paper
Most people already have a wall in mind, but it is worth a second opinion. A focal wall works when the eye lands on it naturally as you walk in: the wall behind a headboard, the far wall of a dining room, or the space framing a fireplace or television. Walls interrupted by several doors, a thermostat and a pass-through rarely read as a feature, because the pattern gets chopped into small pieces.
Light matters too. Plenty of Maitland homes sit close to one of the area's lakes, and rooms that face the water often get strong morning or late-day sun. A glossy or metallic paper on a wall that catches direct sun will show every slight ripple in the drywall, so on bright walls we tend to steer toward matte, textured or lightly embossed papers that forgive minor surface flaws.
Papers that work well on a single wall
Because an accent wall uses only a handful of rolls, it is a good place to try something bolder than you would put on four walls. Here are the materials we install most often for feature walls in this area:
- Large-scale florals and botanicals, which suit the tall walls in many bedrooms and look intentional rather than busy on one surface
- Geometric and stripe patterns, where we take extra care to keep verticals plumb so the lines do not drift toward the ceiling
- Textured vinyl and vinyl-coated papers, a practical pick for dining rooms and kids' rooms because they wipe clean
- Non-woven paste-the-wall papers, which go up cleanly and come off later in full sheets if you change your mind
- Peel-and-stick panels for renters or short-term looks, with the caveat that they grip poorly on heavily textured walls
How a Maitland accent wall comes together
We start by checking the wall itself. Older block homes built in the mid-century era often have plaster or a heavy texture, while newer stucco houses usually have knockdown or orange-peel drywall. Heavy texture telegraphs through thin wallpaper, so we may skim it smooth before anything else happens. Nail pops, old anchors and patched holes get filled and sanded.
Next comes a wallpaper primer. It seals the surface so the paste grabs evenly, and it makes the paper far easier to remove years from now. Once the primer is dry, we plan the layout so the pattern centers on the wall or on the furniture that will sit in front of it, and so you never end up with a skinny sliver strip in a corner.
Hanging itself is the shortest part. We book a strip, smooth it, match the next one, and trim top and bottom with a fresh blade. Outlet and switch plates come off and go back on over the paper, and we cut around window casings and crown molding by hand.
Humidity, storms and indoor air
Central Florida summers run hot and humid from June through September, with afternoon thunderstorms nearly every day. That moisture affects how paste cures. If a home has been closed up with the air conditioning off, or if a door to a screened porch stays open, the wall can stay damp long enough for seams to lift. We ask that the AC run normally for a day before and after the install so the room is stable.
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. If a storm knocks out power, we would rather reschedule than hang paper in a room that is heating up and getting muggy by the hour.
Planning the project with us
Send us a photo of the wall, its rough width and height, and the paper you like, or a few styles you are weighing. We will tell you how many rolls the pattern repeat calls for, whether the wall needs smoothing, and how long the visit should take. We also serve neighboring Winter Park, Eatonville, Edgewood, Belle Isle and Ocoee, so if you are comparing ideas with a friend nearby, the same process applies.
