The short answer
We hang single feature walls in Belle Isle homes, from block ranches to newer two-story houses. Because we are only about 2 miles away, we can test samples on site, then prep and paper the wall in a single visit in most cases.
Belle Isle sits just about 2 miles east of our Orlando base, close enough that we can stop by, hold samples against your wall and talk through options before a single roll is ordered. That matters for accent walls, because the choice of surface and pattern is half the result. Homes here range from mid-century concrete-block ranches with plaster or textured drywall to newer two-story stucco houses with tall great rooms, and many have big windows facing a lake, a canal or a screened pool enclosure. Each of those details changes which wall should get the pattern and which product will sit well on it. Below is how we approach a feature wall in this part of Orange County.
Older block homes versus newer builds
In a ranch house built in the 1950s through the 1970s, interior walls are often plaster over block or furring strips, or drywall that has been patched by several owners. Surfaces can be wavy, and corners are seldom perfectly square. A loose, organic pattern, a textured paper or a design with no strong vertical lines is more forgiving on these walls than a tight stripe or grid, which will expose every bow.
Newer stucco-exterior homes usually have smooth or lightly textured drywall inside, long uninterrupted walls and higher ceilings. They can carry bold geometrics, large-scale florals and vertical stripes that make a room feel taller. The tradeoff is size: a two-story wall needs scaffolding or tall ladders and more material, and a mistake in plumb shows from the balcony as well as the floor.
Looking at light from the water side
Many Belle Isle living rooms face outward toward water or a pool cage, which floods the room with reflected light in the afternoon. That bright, low-angle sun makes metallic and high-gloss papers shimmer, which some people love and others find distracting. It also exaggerates small surface flaws on the wall itself.
For a wall that gets direct sun, matte and suede-like finishes keep the pattern readable. For a wall opposite the windows, a little sheen can bounce light back into the room nicely. We usually recommend taping up a sample for a couple of days so you can see it at breakfast, at mid-afternoon and under lamps at night.
- Matte finishes for walls in direct afternoon sun
- Light-reflective metallics for darker interior walls
- Textured vinyls to disguise wavy plaster
- Fade-resistant inks for rooms facing west
Good candidates for a single papered wall
A wall that frames something is the strongest choice. Behind a bed, a buffet, a desk or a fireplace, a pattern gives the furniture a backdrop. In split-plan ranch homes, the short wall at the end of a hallway can become a nice surprise. In a newer house with an open kitchen and family room, the wall beside the dining table often anchors the eating area without competing with cabinetry.
We generally steer away from papering a wall that only shows in pieces, such as one broken by a doorway, a pass-through and a window. The pattern ends up chopped into small panels, and the effect is lost.
Prep and installation steps
We clear and protect the area, turn off power to outlets on the wall and remove cover plates. Plaster walls get any loose spots secured and cracks filled. Textured drywall may get a skim coat if the chosen paper is thin. Every surface gets a wallcovering primer, which helps the paste bond and makes eventual removal much cleaner.
The pattern is centered on the focal point, such as the middle of the bed or fireplace, rather than started from a corner. We drop a plumb line, hang strips outward in both directions and match each seam. Trimming happens at ceiling and baseboard with fresh blades, and cover plates are papered to match where possible.
Most accent walls are finished the same day. Because Belle Isle is so close to our base, a follow-up visit to check seams after the first week costs you nothing in scheduling.
Climate notes for lakeside homes
Houses near water can run more humid indoors, especially from June through September when hot afternoons bring thunderstorms almost daily. Doors to the pool deck open and close all day, and that moist air finds its way inside. We acclimate the paper in your conditioned home first and ask that the air conditioning stay on steadily while the paste cures. A dehumidifier in a room that tends to feel damp is a small investment that helps any wallcovering last.
Neighbors we also serve
Besides Belle Isle, we install accent walls in Edgewood, Sky Lake, Winter Park, Eatonville and Maitland. If neighbors are planning similar projects, we can often schedule them on nearby days.
